Beschreibung/About the coin

Deutsch 3329.gif

The Swedish viking geocoin is a coin designed by Fredrik Wellner. He wrote to these coins:
The idea for this coin was to make a rather simple design and turn it to get different sceneries: a forest, a field, a campfire and the sea. On top of the sceneries are prints of different petroglyphs from my area. The backside is from a gilded clasp from the 8th century found of Gotland, showing characteristic animal ornaments.

A Bountiful Land
The A bountiful land edition shows fields, a small lake and forests in the back. I was thinking of the fields and the bays of the Baltic sea in the southern parts of our municipality. This rune carving is the most classical of the carvings, it is found in the northern parts of the municipality on the shore of lake Mälaren. It was a place many people passed by boat from Birka and Sigtuna to the Baltic sea.
The carving says "Ödbjörn and Sigbjörn and Gudbjörn, the brothers, had this stone carved after Björn, their father." The carving is from the 11th century. There is a cache at the carving, Runsten Kiholmen (GC2JG1K). You can see some photos of the carving in the logs.

Holmfast's Wolf
The Holmfast's wolf edition is a part of a larger rune carving just a few hundred meters from where I (Fredrik Wellner) live. The carving has three parts, two of them are more like classical rune carvings with text. The first says (approximately) "Holmfast cleared this road to honor Ingegärd his good mother". The second says "Holmfast cleared this road and built a bridge after Gamal his father, who lived in Näsby. God save his soul. Östen (carved these runes)". The third carving is the wolf itself.
The road Holmfast built was probably a precursor of "Göta Landsväg", a famous medieval main road from Stockholm to the south parts of the country. The road is still in use today and bears Holmfasts name. The carving is dated to about 1000 AD, it's quite possible that remnants of Holmfast's bridge and road is still to be found underneath it. I find it quite fascinating that we still travel the same roads 1000 years later. There is a cache at the carving, Holmfast (GC19VEP). You can see some photos of the stone in the logs.

Stormy Weather
The Stormy weather edition shows old ships on a stormy sea. The ship carvings are known as "Lingaskeppen" and is far older than the other than the viking carvings, They are at least 2500 years old but can be even older, they are from the period 1800- 500 BC.
There is no cache pointing out the carving, it can be found at N59 04.279 E17 35.076 but you have to cross a field. There is a modern interpretation of the ships in a roundabout nearby, and those ships have a cache - "Båtar på torra land" (GC371E7).

Under the Pale Moon
The Under the pale moon edition shows a warrior that is attacked by a beast at a campfire. The picture of the warrior is from a rune stone placed at Ytterenhörna church north of Södertälje. The stone has been used as structural part of the church and is quite worn, so I had to do some assumptions of the original design. As you can see the artist didn't know of the concept of perspective drawing...
The stone is dated to 1020-1050 BC. There is a cache at the church, "Ytterenhörna" (GC3BYMV).
