Die Haec Libertatis Ergo Geocoin wurde entworfen von [[Team van Stoffelen]] der die Geocoin zusammen mit dem [[geocoinshop.de]] 
münzen ließ. 
 
Im Achtzigjährigen Krieg (auch Spanisch-Niederländischer Krieg) von 1568 bis 1648 erkämpfte die Republik der Sieben Vereinigten 
Niederlande ihre Unabhängigkeit von der spanischen Krone. Spanische Truppen belagerten während des 80 jährigen Krieges die Stadt 
Leiden. Im Jahre 1574 wurde die Stadt befreit, indem die umliegenden Deichen zerstört wurden und somit Schiffe die Möglichkeit 
geboten war, die belagerte Stadt mit Proviant zu versorgen. Mit der Beendigung des Krieges erkannte Spanien die Unabhängigkeit 
der nördlichen Niederlande im Westfälischen Frieden offiziell an und die nördlichen Niederlande schieden somit aus dem Verband 
des Heiligen Römischen Reiches aus. Der südliche Teil der Niederlande blieb dagegen bei Spanien aus dem im 19. Jahrhundert 
Belgien hervor ging 
Die Vorderseite der Geocoin ist eine Papiermünze der Stadt Leiden aus dem Jahre 1574 nachempfunden. Diese Papiermünze wurde 
während des 80 jährigen Krieges der Niederländer gegen Spanien herausgegeben, um den Widerstand gegen die Spanische Besetzer 
der Stadt Leiden zu finanzieren. Die Geocoin zeigt einen Niederländische Löwe mit einem Speer in seiner Pfote. Auf der Spitze 
des Speeres hängt der Hut der Freiheit. Der Text "Haec libertatis ergo" bedeutet soviel wie "Vereint für die Freiheit". 
Die Rückseite zeigt eine gebrochene Kette, die Niederländische Flagge und die Schlüssel der Stadt Leiden.

The Haec Libertatis Ergo Geocoin was designed by [[Team van Stoffelen]] who minted the coin together with the [[geocoinshop.de]]. 
 
The Eighty Years’ War, or Dutch War of Independence, (1568–1648) began as a revolt of the Seventeen Provinces against Philip II 
of Spain, the sovereign of the Habsburg Netherlands. After the initial stages Philip II deployed his armies and regained control 
over most of the rebelling provinces. However, under the leadership of the exiled William of Orange the northern provinces 
continued their resistance and managed to oust the Spanish armies, and established the republic of the Seven United Netherlands. 
The subsequent war between the Spanish empire and the Republic continued, although the heartland of the Republic was no longer 
threatened. The war ended in 1648 with the Peace of Munster when the Dutch Republic was recognised as an independent country. 
 
The front of this geocoin is made after a silver copy of a paper coin from the city of Leiden in 1574. This paper coin was 
made to finance the 80-year Dutch revolt against the Spanish occupier. Spanish troups besieged the city, but in 1574 the 
city was relieved by cutting the dikes thus enabling ships to carry provisions to the inhabitants of the flooded town. 
The coins shows a Dutch lion with on it’s lance a hat of freedom. The text "Haec libertatis ergo" means "all the for the 
sake of freedom". On the back of the coin the broken chain, dutch flag and the keys of the city of Leiden.
