Atlantis ist ein mythisches Inselreich außerhalb der "Säulen des Herakles" im Atlantik. Erstmals erwähnt wurde es vom griechischen Philosophen Platon (428/427 bis 348/347 v. Chr.). Laut ihm war es eine große Seemacht, die große Teile Europas und Afrikas unterworfen hatte. Laut der Legende ist Atlantis dann um 9600 v. Chr. nach einem vergeblichen Versuch Athen einzunehmen, infolge einer Naturkatastrophe innerhalb "eines einzigen Tages und einer unglückseligen Nacht" untergegangen. Bis heute wurde Atlantis nie wieder entdeckt.
