The Bone Wars (zu deutsch: „Knochenkriege“, auch bekannt unter: Die große Dinosaurier Jagd) war eine persönliche und wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung zwischen zwei amerikanischen Paläontologen gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die am Anfang noch befreundeten Paläontologen Edward Drinker Cope und Othniel Charles Marsh teilten ihre Leidenschaft für Wissenschaft und Palöontologie. Unglücklicherweise kippte ihre Freundschaft mit der Zeit, als Marsh, Cope auf einen Fehler aufmerksam machte.

1869 publizierte Cope in Eile eine neue Art von Plesiosaurier Elasmosaurus platyurus, welcher er in seinem Büro in Kansas zugeschickt bekommen hatte. Leider unterlief ihm der Zusammenbau des Skeletts einen Fehler, indem er den Saurierkopf statt auf dem Kopfteil auf dem Schwanzteil platzierte. Während ein Besuch von Marsh bei Cope, wies Marsh ihm auf den Fehler hin, woraufhin es zu einen langen Wortgefecht kam. Sie entschieden, dass Joseph Leidy die Sachlage klären müsste, welcher den Fehler bestätigte. Nach Marsh eigener Kommentierung waren sie seit jenen Tag verbitterte Feinde.

Während beide sich immer mehr in die Entdeckung und Beschreibung neuer arten vertieften, wuchs ihre Rivalität immer weiter. Obwohl ihre Rivalität, neue Arten zu entdecken und zu beschreiben, viele neue Arten zu Tage brachte, trieben sich sich immer weiter bis ins Extreme an; Cope eilte von eine Publikation zur nächste, gefüllt mit leichtsinnige Fehler, während Marsh ohne Rücksicht seinen Weg bahnte, auf der Jagd nach neue Arten.

Während diese Fehde zwischen Edward Cope und Orhniel Marsh ihren wissenschaftliche Karriere verschlang, bildet die Qualität und Vielzahl ihre Entdeckungen, sowie ihre Sammlungen, das Fundament der amerikanischen Saurier Paläontologie.

The Bone Wars - also known as the Great Dinosaur Rush - was a period of rivalry between two wealthy scientists. Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh had started out as friends, both sharing a love for science and paleontology. Unfortunately, their relationship turned sour when Marsh pointed out one of Cope's errors.

In 1869, Cope hurried to publish a new species of plesiosaur that had been shipped to his office from Kansas. He dubbed the new creature Elasmosaurus platyurus, but in constructing his new specimen, he made the mistake of placing the dinosaur's head on the end of its tail. While visiting Cope, Marsh pointed out this error, resulting in a sharp exchange of words. They decided to have Joseph Leidy verify the accusation, which turned out to be true. After the whole ordeal, Marsh commented that Cope had been his bitter enemy since that day.

As the two dove deeper into excavating and discovering new specimens, the rivalry only grew. Yet even though their race against each other to discover and name new species brought many specimens to light, Cope and Marsh drove themselves to the extremes; Cope rushed to publish works that were filled with careless errors, and Marsh bullied and bribed his way through in his pursuit of new specimens.

While the feud between Edward Cope and Othniel Marsh consumed the scientist's lives, the quality and multitude of bones they discovered and collected became the foundation American paleontology.
