Hintergrundinformationen/Story behind the mistake

Deutsch 3329.gif

Woraufhin Coinsandpins Groundspeak kontaktierte.

Ergebnis:

At groundspeak datafile a lot of chaos exist on this coin. Actually there is not one but two coins hidden behind this name ID.
In 2007 Oakcoins.com reserved the icon slot #1058 with the title "Red Remembrance Poppies Geocoin" and an own icon #1058 Lost Icon1058.png,
which lookalike the coin and showed a red poppy.

In 2007 coinsandpins.com also released a coin called "Canadian Red Popper Spy" with a own icon #1317 1317.gif, which is based on the Canadian flag.
By incident of groundspeak all trackingcodes of the "Canadian Red Popper Spy" were assigned to the icon #1058 Lost Icon1058.png.
Additional also the four remints of the "Red Remembrance" were assigned to icon #1058 (which was indeed correct).

After complains of several owners of the "Canadian Red Popper Spy Coin" that there coin shows the wrong icon (Lost Icon1058.png instead of 1317.gif).
Coinsandpins contacted Groundspeak.

The outcome was:

  • The possy icon at the icon slot #1058 was deleted (the picture 1058.gif doesn't exist anymore).
  • when contacting ID 1058 the icon #1317 of coinsandpins.com is shown instead.
  • In the end they even missed to change the name by the icon ID for #1317!!

Coins Beschreibung/About the coins

Red Remembrance Poppies Geocoin

During World War I, Red Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas) carpeted the fields during battles especially in Flanders.
The little red flowers sprang up in bomb craters, around trenches and often marked soldiers' graves.

Today the red Flanders poppy remains a symbol of war and its heroes.
Many remember their lost friends and family members by wearing a paper poppy pinned to their lapel on November 11th, Veterans Day.

Canadian Red Popper Spy

This coin is made to "commemorate" (if you will) the event that occurred in 2007 when U.S. Army contractors in Canada thought the Canadian Red Poppy quarter was a spy coin.
They suspected the protective coating placed over the colored poppy art was some kind of nano-technology used to spy on the contractors.
They even thought the coins may be emitting radio frequencies. They then reported it to the US Department of Defense,
which caused an alarm to go out that Army contractors with security clearances were being spied on.

You would think it would have been so much easier to ask a store clerk or look up the quarter on the internet instead of going through all the paranoia.
